Yatzy Booku!

How to Play Yatzy Booku!

The Rules

Yatzy Booku! is a multiplayer dice game that extends the classic Yatzy formula with 6 dice and 20 scoring categories. Each game consists of 20 rounds, one per category. On your turn, you roll all 6 dice, then choose which dice to keep and which to re-roll. You get up to 3 rolls per turn before you must assign your result to one of the unused scoring categories. The player with the highest total score after all 20 rounds wins the game. Up to 6 players can compete in a single game, taking turns in real time.

  1. Roll all 6 dice by clicking the Roll button. After the first roll, click individual dice to lock or unlock them. Locked dice are kept for the next roll while unlocked dice are re-rolled.
  2. You have up to 3 rolls per turn. After any roll, you may choose to stop and score. You can lock and unlock any combination of dice between rolls.
  3. After your final roll (or when you choose to stop early), assign your result to an unused scoring category. Each category can only be used once per game. If your dice do not qualify for a category, you may still assign a zero to that category to discard it.
  4. Each turn has a 30-second timer. If time runs out, the game automatically assigns your dice to the lowest-value available category. This keeps the game moving for all players.
  5. After all 20 rounds, the player with the highest total score wins. In the event of a tie, the player who completed their rounds faster (lower total time) wins.

The 20 Scoring Categories

The upper section contains six categories corresponding to each die face, plus a bonus:

  • Ones through Sixes: Sum of all dice showing that number. For example, rolling 3-3-3-5-6-1 scores 9 in the Threes category.
  • Upper Bonus: If your upper section total reaches 84 or more, you receive a bonus of 50 points. With 6 dice, the threshold is higher than traditional Yatzy (which uses 63 with 5 dice).

The lower section contains thirteen categories based on dice combinations:

  • Three of a Kind: At least three dice showing the same value. Score is the sum of all 6 dice.
  • Four of a Kind: At least four dice showing the same value. Score is the sum of all 6 dice.
  • Five of a Kind: At least five dice showing the same value. Score is the sum of all 6 dice.
  • Full House: Three of one kind and three of another (with 6 dice, this means exactly two groups of three). Fixed score of 25 points.
  • Three Pairs: Three distinct pairs. Fixed score of 30 points.
  • Two Triples (2x3): Two groups of three identical dice. Fixed score of 40 points.
  • Small Straight: Four consecutive numbers (e.g., 1-2-3-4 or 3-4-5-6). Fixed score of 30 points.
  • Large Straight: Five consecutive numbers (e.g., 1-2-3-4-5 or 2-3-4-5-6). Fixed score of 40 points.
  • Grand Straight: All six dice showing 1-2-3-4-5-6. Fixed score of 60 points.
  • Chance: No requirements. Score is the sum of all 6 dice. Use this when no other category fits.
  • Yatzy Booku!: All 6 dice showing the same number. Fixed score of 100 points. The ultimate roll and the hardest category to achieve.

Tips to Play Better

  • Prioritize the upper section bonus early. Scoring at or above the average for each number (3 of each face value) gets you to 84. The 50-point bonus is one of the biggest score advantages in the game.
  • Do not chase Yatzy Booku! at the expense of solid category scores. While 100 points is tempting, the odds of rolling six identical dice are extremely low. Score it if it happens naturally, but do not waste turns pursuing it.
  • Use the Chance category strategically. Save it for a turn where you roll a high total but do not qualify for any specific combination. A strong Chance score (30+) is often better than forcing a zero in a valuable category.
  • Pay attention to what categories your opponents have already used. In tight games, knowing which high-value categories are still available can help you decide whether to take a safe score or gamble for a bigger one.
  • Grand Straight (1-2-3-4-5-6) is worth 60 points and is more achievable than it appears with 6 dice. If your first roll shows four or five sequential numbers, it is often worth re-rolling for the straight.
  • Think carefully before discarding a category with a zero. Early zeros can come back to haunt you in later rounds when you might have qualified for that category but no longer have it available.
