How to Play Solitaire

The Rules

Klondike Solitaire is the classic single-player card game played with a standard 52-card deck. The playing area consists of four zones: the tableau (seven columns of cards), the foundations (four empty piles where you build completed suits), the stock (remaining face-down cards), and the waste pile (cards drawn from the stock). Your goal is to move all 52 cards to the four foundation piles, one per suit, building each from Ace up to King in order.

  1. The tableau is dealt with seven columns. The first column has one card face-up, the second has one face-down and one face-up, and so on. The seventh column has six face-down cards and one face-up card on top.
  2. Move cards within the tableau by placing them in descending order and alternating colors. For example, a black 7 can be placed on a red 8. You can move single cards or sequences of correctly ordered cards between columns.
  3. When a face-down card is exposed at the bottom of a tableau column, it flips face-up automatically. When a tableau column is emptied, only a King (or a sequence starting with a King) may be placed there.
  4. Move Aces to the foundations as soon as they appear. Build each foundation pile upward in suit order: Ace, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, Jack, Queen, King.
  5. Click the stock pile to draw cards to the waste pile. In Draw 1 mode, one card is turned at a time. In Draw 3 mode, three cards are turned and only the top card is playable. When the stock is exhausted, click the empty stock area to recycle the waste pile back into the stock.
  6. The game is won when all four foundations are completely built from Ace to King. If no more moves are possible and the foundations are incomplete, the game is lost.

Draw 1 vs Draw 3

Draw 1 mode is more forgiving because every card in the stock is accessible in sequence. This mode is ideal for beginners or for a relaxing game during a quick break. Draw 3 mode is the traditional competitive version. Only every third card in the stock is directly playable, meaning you must plan ahead and cycle through the stock multiple times to access buried cards. Draw 3 has a significantly lower win rate (around 10-15% compared to about 80% for Draw 1), making victories much more rewarding. Competitive mode daily challenges alternate between Draw 1 and Draw 3 throughout the week.

Tips to Play Better

  • Always play Aces and Twos to the foundations immediately. There is never a strategic reason to keep them in the tableau since no card can be placed on an Ace or a Two in the tableau.
  • Prioritize uncovering face-down cards. Moves that reveal hidden cards in the tableau give you more options and are almost always better than moves that rearrange face-up cards.
  • Do not move cards to the foundations too aggressively. A card on a foundation cannot be moved back to the tableau. If you build foundations unevenly, you may block useful tableau moves.
  • Empty columns are powerful. Only Kings can fill empty columns, so plan ahead to ensure a King is available before emptying a column. An empty column with no King to fill it wastes an important resource.
  • In Draw 3, pay attention to the order of cards in the stock. As you cycle through, memorize key positions so you can plan which moves to make before drawing to access specific buried cards.
  • When choosing between two possible moves, prefer the move that uncovers the most face-down cards or creates the longest descending sequence.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Is Solitaire free to play on OfficeGames.io?

A: Yes, Solitaire is completely free. Free Play mode offers unlimited games in both Draw 1 and Draw 3 modes without an account. A free account unlocks Competitive mode with daily challenges, points, leaderboard rankings, and eligibility for real cash rewards.

Q: What is the difference between Draw 1 and Draw 3?

A: In Draw 1, you flip one card at a time from the stock pile, giving you access to every card. In Draw 3, three cards are flipped at once and only the top card is playable. Draw 3 is significantly harder because many cards remain buried and require cycling through the stock multiple times. Draw 3 rewards deeper strategic thinking and planning.

Q: Can I undo moves?

A: Yes. Free Play mode offers unlimited undo with no penalty. In Competitive mode, the undo feature is also available but each undo reduces your final point total slightly. This encourages careful play while still allowing corrections for accidental misclicks.

Q: How does scoring work?

A: Points are awarded based on the number of cards moved to the foundations, the speed of completion, and the number of moves used. Fewer moves and faster times earn higher scores. In Competitive mode, your daily score contributes to your monthly leaderboard total. Completion time serves as the tiebreaker for players with equal points.

Q: Are there daily challenges?

A: Yes. Every day, a new Solitaire challenge is posted in Competitive mode. All players receive the exact same deal, making the competition fair. Complete the challenge to earn points toward the monthly leaderboard and real cash rewards. You can retry if you fail, but each retry deducts points.
