The Rules

2048 is a sliding tile puzzle played on a 4x4 grid. The board starts with two tiles, each showing the number 2 or 4. On every turn, you slide all tiles in one direction (up, down, left, or right) using arrow keys or swipe gestures. When two tiles with the same number collide during a slide, they merge into a single tile with their combined value. After each move, a new tile (2 or 4) appears in a random empty cell. The goal is to create a tile with the value 2048. The game ends when no more moves are possible because the grid is full and no adjacent tiles share the same value.

1. Use the arrow keys on your keyboard or swipe on a touchscreen to slide all tiles in one direction. Every tile on the board moves as far as it can in the chosen direction.
2. When two tiles with the same value collide, they merge into one tile with double the value. For example, two 4-tiles merge into an 8-tile, two 8-tiles merge into a 16-tile, and so on.
3. Each tile can only merge once per move. If a row contains [2, 2, 2, 2] and you slide left, the result is [4, 4, empty, empty] not [8, empty, empty, empty]. Merges are processed from the leading edge of the slide direction.
4. After every move that changes the board state, a new tile (usually a 2, occasionally a 4) spawns in a random empty cell. If your move would not change the board, no new tile appears and you must try a different direction.
5. Your score increases by the value of each merged tile. Merging two 64-tiles adds 128 to your score. The total score reflects the sum of all merges throughout the game.

The Corner Strategy

The most widely recommended strategy is the corner technique. Choose one corner of the board (most players use the bottom-left or bottom-right) and keep your highest-value tile anchored there. Build a descending chain of tiles along the edge, so the second-highest tile is next to the highest, the third-highest is next to that, and so on. This creates a systematic merging path where tiles combine efficiently toward the corner. The key discipline is to avoid pressing the direction that would dislodge your highest tile from its corner. For example, if your highest tile is in the bottom-right, avoid pressing up unless absolutely necessary. This approach turns the chaotic-seeming game into a structured puzzle with repeatable results.

Tips to Play Better

• Never move your highest tile out of its corner. Plan every move around keeping that anchor position stable. If you must move it, immediately work to restore it.
• Focus on building chains. A descending sequence like 512-256-128-64 along an edge lets you merge them efficiently when the right tiles appear.
• Keep the board as empty as possible. More empty cells mean more room to maneuver and a lower chance of getting stuck. Avoid spreading tiles across the entire grid.
• Think two or three moves ahead. Before pressing a direction, consider where tiles will land and whether a new spawn in the wrong spot could block your chain.
• When the board is getting crowded, prioritize merges that free up the most space rather than chasing the biggest merge. A 4+4 merge that opens a critical cell is often better than waiting for a larger merge.
• Practice patience. The 2048 tile requires at least 11 merges from a 2-tile (2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, 128, 256, 512, 1024, 2048). Rushing leads to a scattered board and an early game over.
