Connections
How to Play Connections
The Rules
Connections is a word categorization puzzle. You are presented with a grid of 16 words and must sort them into four groups of four, where each group shares a hidden connection or theme. The connections can range from obvious (types of fruit, shades of blue) to extremely subtle (words that follow a specific word, parts of a famous phrase, or items sharing an unexpected trait). The challenge is that many words seem to fit in multiple groups, creating deliberate misdirection that makes the puzzle engaging and tricky.
- Study the 16 words on the board. Look for patterns, themes, and connections between them. Take your time before making any guesses.
- Select four words that you believe belong to the same category by clicking or tapping each word. Selected words are highlighted. Click a selected word again to deselect it.
- Once you have selected four words, press Submit to check your guess. If all four words belong to the same group, the group is revealed with its category name and color. The four words are removed from the board.
- If your guess is wrong, you lose one of your four attempts. The game tells you if you were one word away from a correct group, which is a valuable clue for your next guess.
- Continue until all four groups are found or you run out of guesses. When you run out of guesses, the remaining groups are revealed automatically.
Difficulty Colors
Each group is assigned a difficulty color that is revealed when the group is correctly identified. Yellow is the easiest group with the most straightforward connection. Green is slightly harder, often requiring a bit more thought. Blue groups are tricky and may involve wordplay, less common knowledge, or connections that are not immediately obvious. Purple is the hardest group and frequently relies on clever misdirection, obscure trivia, double meanings, or creative associations that only become clear in hindsight. Understanding this difficulty progression helps you strategize your approach. Starting with the group you are most confident about (likely yellow or green) reduces your chance of wasting guesses on the harder categories.
Tips to Play Better
- Start with the group you are most confident about. Correctly identifying one group removes four words from the board, making the remaining groups easier to see.
- Watch out for red herrings. The puzzle designers intentionally include words that seem to belong together but are actually split across different groups. If three words obviously go together but you cannot find a fourth, reconsider whether one of those three actually belongs elsewhere.
- Pay attention to the "one away" hint. If the game tells you that your guess was one word away from being correct, you know three of your four selections are right. Swap out each of the four words one at a time to find the correct combination.
- Think about words with multiple meanings. A word like "SPRING" could relate to seasons, water sources, metal coils, or the verb to jump. The puzzle often exploits these ambiguities.
- Consider less obvious connections. Beyond simple categories like "colors" or "animals," groups might connect through shared prefixes, suffixes, compound words, or phrases. For example, four words might all precede "BOARD" (skate, snow, card, surf).
- Save your guesses. If you are unsure, spend more time analyzing rather than guessing randomly. With only four attempts, each guess must count. It is better to take two extra minutes thinking than to waste a guess on a hunch.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Is Connections free to play on OfficeGames.io?
A: Yes, Connections is completely free. Free Play offers unlimited puzzles with randomly generated word groups. A free account unlocks Competitive mode with curated daily puzzles, points, leaderboard rankings, and eligibility for real cash rewards each month.
Q: How many guesses do I get in Connections?
A: You have four guesses to find all four groups. Each incorrect guess costs one of your four attempts. If you use all four guesses without completing the board, the remaining groups are revealed. In Competitive mode, fewer mistakes earn significantly more points.
Q: What do the category colors mean?
A: Each of the four groups is assigned a difficulty color. Yellow is the easiest and most straightforward category. Green is a moderate challenge. Blue is tricky and often involves wordplay or less obvious connections. Purple is the hardest and most deceptive, frequently relying on obscure knowledge, double meanings, or creative associations.
Q: How do I earn rewards playing Connections?
A: Create a free account and complete daily challenges in Competitive mode. Points are awarded based on the number of mistakes (fewer is better). The top players each month share a reward pool funded by 25% of ad revenue, paid via Revolut, PayPal, Wise, or bank transfer on the 1st.
Q: Is there a time limit in Connections?
A: There is no time limit. You can take as long as you need to study the 16 words and find the groups. However, completion time is tracked invisibly and serves as a tiebreaker on the monthly leaderboard when players have equal point totals. Faster solves give you an edge in close competitions.
